Villa Castriota: a boutique retreat in the heart of Kruja

You can spend a day in Kruja and see the sights. But to feel Kruja, you need a night -and there may be no better place for it than Villa Castriota. This family-run boutique stay, quietly located just below the old bazar of Kruja and historic Castle walls, offers not just a bed, but a pause. A deep breath. A reminder that travel, at its best, reconnects us to something deeper than ourselves.

THE ROOMS

This boutique stay offers 12 rooms, including deluxe double, twin and triple rooms. Each of them is warm and thoughtfully designed -think of parquet floors, carved wooden furniture and a unique mix of traditional and contemporary elements making them the ideal retreat in the heart of Kruja. The best part? The views. Nine of the rooms at Villa Castriota have panoramic balcony views overlooking the historic castle and surrounding hills, creating an unforgettable backdrop for your stay. Mornings here starts with a traditional breakfast made by the owners. The food is a celebration of Albanian hospitality: omelets with fresh eggs, cheese and different vegetables, home-baked byrek with garden herbs and spinach, bread, fresh fruit, coffee, ham and local cheeses, home-made fruit cakes and croissants with self-made fruity jam. It’s one of the highlights of the stay and with good reason. You can enjoy it on your balcony, in the cozy lounge, or even in bed. There’s no rush. The castle can wait.

EXPERIENCES

What truly sets Villa Castriota apart isn’t its location (though that’s perfect), or its rooms (they’re beautiful), or even the excellent breakfast. It’s the people. The family who runs the hotel does more than check you in. They offer local tips, help arrange rides, serve breakfast early if you have a bus to catch, and greet you with a warmth that stays with you long after you’ve left. Villa Castriota isn’t just another guesthouse. It’s a reflection of Kruja itself: historic, humble, and quietly proud. The hotel sits just steps away from some of Albania’s most iconic sites: the old bazar of Kruja, Skanderbeg Museum, the ethnographic museum, and the imposing Castle that once guarded this mountain town. The hotel itself is named after Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, and staying here feels like walking in his footsteps -albeit with Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and the kind of mattress you’ll never want to leave.
