The Summer We Wish Would Never End

There is a particular kind of summer that exists in Albania. It is not measured in days, but in long afternoons that seem to have forgotten the time. In the sound of the sea, in wet hair drying in the sun, in a table that stays set long after lunch because nobody is in a hurry to leave.

And perhaps this is what we love most about Albanian summerthe permission to slow down.

To wake up without an alarm. To spend half the day doing almost nothing. To go for a swim simply because the water is there, warm and blue, and because someone you love has just said, Come on.

There is a quiet luxury in that.

The luxury of having nowhere to be. Of sitting in the shade with friends you haven’t seen for months, picking up a conversation as if you had left it yesterday. Of grandparents watching children play in the water. Of cousins meeting again, of neighbours sharing fruit, coffee, stories. Of dinners that begin late and somehow become tomorrow.

For many Albanians, summer has always meant returning.

Returning to the coast. Returning to the family home. Returning to the people and places that belong to a different rhythm of life. Even those who have spent the year far away seem to find their way back when the days grow longer and the sea becomes irresistible.

Perhaps that is why the end of summer feels a little melancholy.

The light begins to soften. The evenings arrive earlier. Towels hang a little longer before drying. The beach becomes quieter, and the familiar faces start talking about departures, schools, work, autumn.

Soon, we will all be busy again.

But for now, there is still time for one more swim.

One more coffee by the sea. One more lunch that lasts until sunset. One more picture taken without thinking that, one day, it will become a memory.

Because this is the secret of summer in Albania: it is not really about the beach, or the sun, or even the sea.

It is about being together.

About those rare weeks when life becomes wonderfully simple –swim, eat, talk, laugh, rest, repeat.

And when summer finally leaves, what we miss is not the heat.

It is the feeling of having had nowhere else to be.
