A rustic weekend getaway in Berat, at Kantina Pupa

A visit to Berat is quite different compared to visiting any other territories across Albania. Located south of Tirana, this small yet scenic region produces what may be considered one of the best wines in the Balkans. With ancient mountains and green hills lined with excellent indigenous grapevines, this is the perfect Albanian destination for oenophiles. Kantina Pupa, scenically located between the town and sacred Mount Tomorr, at an altitude of 500-700 meters above sea level, is the ideal base for a relaxing weekend getaway surrounded by vineyards, nature and great food.

Kantina Pupa’s restaurant is the perfect place to go for tasting Berat’s authentic cuisine. The kitchen team creates traditional dishes, like byrek pie with spinach or cheese, grilled meat, spicy meatballs, fresh vegetables, stuffed peppers, table olives, fresh bread, and jufka pasta with chicken, among others. The drinks menu features a fine selection of Kantina Pupa red, white and rosé wines, of course. Puls i Artë i Beratit is a straw-colored wine with greenish reflexies, fresh, dry and harmonious, that reflects this unique terroir at its best.

Berat’s region is an area with an ancient wine tradition, located in the heart of south Albania, a great location for growing grapes: the soils are calcareous, climate is mild, sun is warm, and amount of rain is right. At Kantina Pupa the expert team carefully selects and produces autochthonous varieties of the area, such as Puls, a Berat native and secular grape with light golden color, Serina (black and white), Dëbina (black and white) and Birvoli. You can visit the vineyards and take part of winery’s tours for tasting their best wines and learn stories. The best way to end a weekend in the countryside.
